SK lubricants, a fully-owned subsidiary of SK Innovation, is the first to commercialize Group IIIbase stock in the world in 1995. That very same year, ZIC, SK’s finished lubricants’ brand name, which symbolizes the 21 century, was launched in the domestic market of South Korea.
Ever since the launch of ZIC, the word “ZIC” became synonymous with ‘highest quality engine oil’ in Korea, and ZIC has been the top selling lubricant brand for more than a decade in Korea’s domestic market.
After establishing a strong foothold in Korea, SK ZIC started to seek opportunities to expand its brand to other countries. The first success came from Russia where SK’s proprietary technology VHVI Tech (Very High Viscosity Index) enabled cold engine starting even in the most severe cold weather in Siberia, Russia. Currently, ZIC is the third largest brand imported to Russia in terms of volume.
With a vision of becoming a regional major in the Asia region, ZIC has also expanded its presence to other strategic markets such as Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, the Middle East, and China.
SK lubricants decided to further expand its brand to China by constructing a local blending plant which started commercial production on the 1st half of 2012. Located in the free trade zone of Tianjin, this milestone will not only further strengthen the vision of becoming a major lubricant player in China, but also strengthen the commitment to the local customers to better serve the needs and demands of the region.
In 2009, ZIC successfully launched its DEXRON VI product in North America, where SK was awarded to supply its Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), ZIC DEXRON VI, to all General Motors’ transmission plants as the first fill ATF product. This exemplifies the quality and value of what SK ZIC can offer to its business partners, no matter how big or how far away located at.
SK ZIC will continue to expand its brand ZIC to other new markets, simultaneously strengthening its brand power and presence in strategic markets by utilizing the strengths it possess; ‘fuel saving and better protection.’ The market acceptance is getting better each and every day as savvy lubricants customers are becoming more value oriented and requesting for high quality products at a reasonable price, which is exactly what ZIC can offer. Therefore, we, SK lubricants, always say ZIC is ‘affordable luxury.’ SK ZIC is being exported to more than 29 countries as of today, and our global customers are enjoying all the ‘affordable luxury’ that ZIC provides.
